Oh hay solo dos definiciones del poema, como epitafio (Eliot) y como gesto a la amada (Goethe, Elegia de Marienbad, las legendarias cartas de Lugones salpicadas de su semen y sangre), el resto es literatura. Acá hoy hacemos la defensa del amor, a favor de Goethe y en contra de Balzac. No tiene edad ni norma moral alguna. Es una astucia de la razón sentimental, una manera de que la agobiante vida diaria sea superada y puesta en epojé todo el tiempo. Amo el amor aun más que a la amada, llega a acuñar el tavyrai de Cioran. No amor a la sabiduría sino al amor. Es la fiebre que colorea y embelece este valle de lágrimas kempisiano.
Doncella (de Tilhouze): del libro Cuentos droláticos. Es un Balzac moralista. Al considerar que el señor de Valesnes (60 años, feo) abusó de su condición para acceder al honor de la doncella de Tilhouze, se aprovechó de su dinero para tal hazaña. Pero seamos nihilistas, con su fealdad y vejez tenía todas las de perder ante competidores más jóvenes, y ese hándicap equilibraba -gracias al uso discrecional de dinero- tal injusticia natural. Balzac decía: «Una noche de amor es un libro de menos». Frase perfecta de un calvinista y stajanovista de la moral. «Elegía de Marienbad»: En Marienbad (1821), Goethe conoce y se enamora de Ulrika von Levetzow, de 17, criatura alegre y maravillosa. Durante tres veranos se ven. Goethe tenía 72 y pensó seriamente en el matrimonio. Después de una lucha interior decidió renunciar, y todo el drama de la renuncia está expresado en la «Elegía de Marienbad», al tiempo que la punzante delicia de este amor tardío, que el poeta simboliza en las palabras iniciales de paraíso e infierno.
